Dry Needling At Fairlawn Family Chiropractic

Dr. Corey dry needling a patientPatients with spine and joint problems often suffer from inflammation and muscle tension too. Dry needling is a therapy that may help relieve these symptoms.

Also known as intramuscular stimulation, it’s a technique that uses a solid filament needle, meaning there’s no medication on or in the needle. Needles are placed at designated points in your muscle or affected tissue. These “trigger points” are generally hard or knotted; the needle helps release the knot and stop muscle pain and spasms.

At Fairlawn Family Chiropractic, we generally use dry needling as a form of trigger point therapy. Many issues we see in the office have a component of muscular involvement, whether a sprain, strain, or hypertonic (tight and stiff) muscles. It’s a good technique to help relax those muscles.

How Does It Help Me?

Pain affects how your body moves. This technique affects the way the brain and muscles communicate, helping restore a more normal movement pattern. The needles are usually placed deeper than when used for acupuncture, to access those affected areas which may otherwise be difficult to treat. Soreness, aching, or twitching in the muscles are often indications that the therapy has been successful.

Dr. Corey recommends the therapy to those who may not respond as quickly or as well as we would like to traditional chiropractic methods or massage therapy. Patients tend to get better faster than they would with just regular care.

Some patients may be apprehensive at the thought of needles placed in their body. We show them how thin the needles are, and explain the whole procedure. A session is only 10 minutes, and relief is usually noticed within 24 hours. Most patients respond well and see results quickly.

Dry needling may be used to increase range of motion from muscle tightness or scar tissue. It is also beneficial for:

  • Joint problems
  • Disc problems
  • Back and neck pain
  • Strains and sprains
  • Tendinitis
  • Sports injuries
  • Migraine and headaches
  • TMJ
  • Whiplash
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • And more
